Understanding Cyber Liabilities

Wed, 06/06/2012 - 09:00 to 10:30

Almost all companies now use computers and other digital technology as well as have presence on the web. Stealing, replicating and manipulating electronically stored information is much easier than traditional paper copies. Misuse of computer infrastructure and non-compliance of cyber laws is most common.

'Qui facit per alum facit per se'. One who does something through another does it himself; goes a legal maxim that explains the responsibility of a principal vis-avis the acts of his agent. Extend this maxim to the IT and internet-enabled business organisations or for that matter any organisation having a decent IT infrastructure and you have on hand an utterly chaotic as well as a risky situation for the management. There have been several instances when a company is caught off-guard and held responsible for callous actions of its employees which include but are not limited to piracy as well as access to pornographic material on the internet.
